About the Journal

Aims and Scope

Jengkal – Journal of Society, Art, History, and Culture is an open-access, peer-reviewed academic journal committed to advancing interdisciplinary scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. The journal provides a platform for critical reflection and research that explores the complexities of society, culture, and creativity across temporal and spatial contexts.

The scope of Jengkal includes, but is not limited to, the following fields:

  • Anthropology and Ethnology
  • Archaeology and History
  • Art and Visual Culture
  • Sociology and Cultural Studies
  • Museum and Heritage Studies
  • East Asian History
  • Critical Epistemologies
  • World War and Cold War History

The journal particularly welcomes contributions that engage with decolonial, indigenous, and community-based approaches, as well as comparative and cross-cultural perspectives that challenge established narratives and methodologies.

Editorial Policy

Jengkal publishes original and unpublished works that contribute to theoretical development, methodological innovation, and empirical understanding within the humanities and social sciences. All submissions undergo a double-blind peer review process to ensure scholarly quality and integrity.

Accepted manuscript types include:

  • Research Articles – Full-length academic studies based on original research.
  • Review Articles – Critical reviews or syntheses of existing scholarship.
  • Book or Exhibition Reviews – Analytical reflections on recent publications or exhibitions relevant to the journal’s scope.

Submissions are accepted in English, with bilingual abstracts and titles encouraged to enhance accessibility.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY SA-NC 4.0), allowing others to share and adapt the work with proper attribution for non-commercial use.

Publication Frequency

Jengkal publishes two issues per year (June and December).
Special issues may be released occasionally to highlight particular themes or collaborative research projects.

Publication Ethics

Jengkal adheres to the ethical standards of scholarly publishing as outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Authors, reviewers, and editors are expected to uphold principles of honesty, transparency, and integrity.
Any form of plagiarism, data fabrication, or unethical research practice will result in rejection or retraction.

Digital Archiving

Jengkal – Journal of Society, Art, History, and Culture ensures the long-term preservation and accessibility of all published content through multiple archiving strategies.

All articles published in Jengkal are permanently stored and openly accessible in the Zenodo Open Access Repository, operated by CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research) and OpenAIRE. Zenodo ensures long-term digital preservation and assigns a persistent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to each uploaded article.

Indexing and Visibility

Jengkal aims to be indexed in national and international databases, including Garuda, Dimensions, DOAJ, and Scopus as part of its commitment to global visibility and academic quality.

Article Processing Charge (APC)

To support our open access policy and high-quality review from our team, the published article will be subject to a € 20 (IDR 350.000) publication fee. The fees will only be charged after the article is deemed suitable for publication.
